KULIM/PENANG, Malaysia -- Austria-based AT&S says it will begin mass producing chip substrate in Kulim, Malaysia, this year, making it the first supplier of such materials to diversify into Southeast Asia amid the ongoing U.S.-China tech war.

"It's wise for companies to have diversified footprints. You don't put all the eggs into one basket," AT&S CEO Andreas Gerstenmayer told Nikkei Asia on the sidelines of the company's factory opening ceremony on Wednesday.
