BANGKOK/YANGON -- Laos, this year's ASEAN chair, has taken over the 10-nation bloc's outreach toward Myanmar by sending veteran diplomat Alounkeo Kittikhoun to meet with the leader of the military regime.

Laos has been more willing to engage with Myanmar's military regime than its predecessor, Indonesia. Laos' ASEAN chairmanship will be watched to see whether it can build momentum for a greater dialogue with Myanmar.
