NANTOU, Taiwan -- Taiwan needs to aggressively increase the number of doctoral students in science, technology and engineering if it is to maintain its edge in the global chip industry, Bowei Lee, group chairman of chip material supplier LCY, told Nikkei Asia.

"Students now are not interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, which is a serious problem for Taiwan's future innovations and industrial development," Lee told Nikkei Asia.
