ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan's National Assembly on Sunday elected Shehbaz Sharif as prime minister, weeks after the country's controversial elections.

Sharif, who will officially assume the top job for the second time after taking an oath, will immediately confront stiff opposition from allies of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who insist the polls were rigged against them. At the same time, the new leader will also have to manage relations with his party's key coalition partner, which is lending support but has refused to join his cabinet.
