Toyota to invest in TSMC arm for 2nd Kumamoto chip plant in Japan

Automaker joins Denso and Sony in providing funds to boost key semiconductor industry

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor will invest in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s Japanese subsidiary to fund the construction of a second chip plant in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture, the two companies announced on Tuesday.

Existing investors including Sony and Denso will also make additional investments into the unit, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing, TSMC said, confirming an earlier report by Nikkei. TSMC will still own a 86.5% stake in the subsidiary, while Sony, Denso and Toyota will hold 6.0%, 5.5%, and 2.0% respectively.
